Since I do a lot of military history, I'm regularly asked to recommend the best book for beginners who want to adopt an organized approach to the subject. I generally come up with something by John Keegan, but now I have a new title to suggest.Dougherty is a freelance historian, not an academic, but he knows his subject very well. His specialty is weapons technology and tactics, and he focuses here on how it all began. "Human history, whether recorded or not, has always been filled with conflict," he says, and I agree entirely. Warfare is part of the basic mental furniture of all human beings, like it or not. That originally meant friction between neighboring tribes in pursuit of the same resources for survival, and the weapons were those used for hunting. There was no military class, everyone was a part-time warrior as needed. The first purely military innovation, the author astutely suggests, was the shield, which shows up in Neolithic rock art, because it has no function in hunting, like the spear and the bow, but only in war.
Then he delves into the essential nature of military forces, their relation to civilian society, and how the earliest civilizations depended on the trained and experienced full-time warrior, beginning with the Sumerians, the Hittites, the Assyrians, and the Babylonians. Later chapters take us into the long imperial history of Egypt, and then to Greece, and then Rome. Each of these produced its own innovations, though some survived longer than others before being overtaken by its latest rival.
In fact, the rise and fall of virtually every ancient civilization, according to the author, depended mostly on its military capabilities. This is a viewpoint which many social historians would dispute, but Dougherty makes it an arguable position. There are drawings, photos, diagrams, and battle maps on every page, with detailed explanatory captions. His style is very readable and his points are clearly made, to the point where you may find yourself taking notes. An excellent starting point in the history of war.
